  • Takayama City area

The area is bustling with tourists all year round, with "Japanese old town atmosphere" and "Takayama Jinya," two of Hida Takayama's most famous sightseeing spots. There are lots of seasonal fun, such as sightseeing temples and shrines amidst cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, hands-on facilities where you can visit, events for sake breweries and specialty products, etc.

The landscape of Hida Takayama, which flourished as a castle town in the Edo period, remains almost as it was.

old town atmosphere is lined with sake breweries and traditional craft shops, and you can enjoy gourmet food and shopping in a space that feels like you've traveled back in time.

In spring and autumn, the Takayama Festival, one of Japan's three major festivals, is held, attracting many tourists from overseas.

The morning market where local ingredients are available, the rickshaws around the town, and the warm contact with the local people is also a real pleasure.

It is a town where you can discover new things no matter how many times you visit, such as local flavors such as "Houba Miso" and "Tsukemono Steak," which are grown in a snowy environment, and traditional crafts where the skills of the craftsmen shine.

If you stay in Takayama City, be sure to go to the morning market . It is held every morning in two areas, and you can buy seasonal vegetables and fruits by talking directly with the producers.

The city of Takayama is famous for its red Nakabashi Bridge, which is famous as a photography spot, the Enako River promenade, which once served as a moat surrounding the castle, and Shiroyama Park, which is famous for its cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.

It is also recommended to go to Hida no Sato, a village of gassho-zukuri. It is a museum where you can enjoy the scenery of rural villages of the old days, lined with 30 typical houses of Hida. The Alps Observation Park Sky Park, located on a hill, is a popular spot for locals, offering panoramic views of the city and the magnificent Hida Mountains.

When it comes to the gourmet food of Hida Takayama, Hida beef is definitely the one. Brand beef that passes strict standards and is recognized attracts many people with its soft, melty taste. Not only Sukiyaki and Shabu-shabu, but also Hida beef skewers and Hida beef nigiri sushi are recommended.

The Mitarashi Dango, which features unsweetened soy sauce sauce, is perfect as a snack. There are many local delicacies, including Takayama Ramen, a combination of light soy sauce-flavored soup and shredded noodles, Houba Miso, a traditional local dish, and Tsukemono Steak, a classic dish at Izakaya in the Hida region.

In addition, traditional crafts are thriving in Hida, where the techniques of craftsmen have been handed down since ancient times. Various traditional crafts are made, such as Ichii Itto-bori, which is hand-carved on a single Ichii piece of wood, Hida Shunkei, which is made of lacquer by using the grain, and Shibukusa-yaki, which has a beautiful texture unique to hand-painting. Hida no Sarubobo, a folk craft that is also a charm, is a popular souvenir with a wide variety of sizes and colors.
